While there are numerous great symphonists in the world of orchestral music David Maslanka should come to the forefront of great wind band symphonists. Symphony No. 10: The River of Time is indicative of Maslanka’s extraordinary mastery of instrumentation. The composer’s music always runs the gamut of emotions from stark philosophic moments of meditative simplicity to raw, intense drama and unparalleled power. Matthew Maslanka, the composer’s second son, completed approximately half of the symnphony and is appropriately credited as co-composer. Also included on this CD are First Light and The Seeker, another pair of Maslanka’s masterworks.
