Walking on Shattered Glass is a fascinating collection of works by women composers. These works could be playable by a good high school band as well as collegiate and professional wind ensembles. The CD begins with In Two Places by Haley Woodrow and can definitely serve as a fresh, new opening work. Catango 5 by Jodie Blackshaw features an advanced SATB saxophone quartet playing in tandem with wind ensemble. Remembering the Remarkables (Grace Baugher Dunlap) was written in honor of the centenary of the women’s suffrage movement…this work is recorded twice; the latter is live and in an alternate key. Other compositions featured are by Cait Nishimura, Valerie Coleman, Jennifer Jolley, Catherine Likhutaa, and Nicole Piunno. Walking on Shattered Glass can stand on its own for quality music band folk should get acquainted with.
