This recording is a tour of an art museum almost like Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition.” A perfect example, which somewhat parallels the Mussorgsky is Picture Studies (Adam Schoenberg/Donald Patterson) This piece is a walk through several works of art at the Nelson-Atkins Museum. Two works by James David are also included: I Saw the Figure 5 in Gold and Swing Landscape-Rhapsody for Piano & Wind Ensemble (Sean Botkin is the soloist). The familiar painting of Grant Wood is musically represented in Michael Daugherty’s American Gothic. The composer arranged the middle movement for band while the outer movements were arranged by the conductor. Petals of Fire (Zhou Tian) is the opening work and the composer’s band transcription is an adaptation from his Concerto for Orchestra. Several instrumental soloists are featured throughout this well-performed visit to works Inspired by Art.
