2018 is the centennial for this American music legend. The GIA CDs feature a very thorough and varied musical salute to Bernstein. The serious compositions are represented with Divertimento, Slava!, Suite from Mass, JFK Fanfare, and Profanation from Symphony No. 1-“Jeremiah”. The broadway, ballet and theater Bernstein is represented by Candide (both the overture and the suite), Three Dance Episodes from “On the Town”, Danzon from “Fancy Free” and Symphonic Dances from “West Side Story” (performed by the Lone Star Wind Orchestra) Also included is Bernstein”s only film score Suite from “On the Waterfront”. While this collection isn’t the complete Bernstein repertoire set for band it is quite sufficient. The arrangers of this music put their best windstration efforts into each work. A masterful pair of recordings capturing (to paraphrase Candide) “the best of all possible Bernstein”.
