Dixie Detgen is a graduate of Western Michigan University earning Bachelor of Music and Master of Arts in Teaching of Music degrees. Her entire career was spent in the Buchanan (MI) Community School system. Most of her work centered on beginning and middle school bands. However, the final three years included teaching high school band. Upon retiring in 1996, Dixie started a business called Detgen Seminars and Clinics, which she still operates. She has presented clinics at every major university in Michigan, plus the Midwest Clinic in Chicago, WIBC in Seattle and lectures at ABC. She also has presented clinics in Idaho, North and South Dakota, and Indiana. She serves as an adjudicator for the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association (MSBOA), judging both solo and ensemble and band and orchestra festivals. Mrs. Detgen was selected as Band Director of the Year (1996) by the membership of MSBOA. She was also awarded the prestigious Edwin Franko Goldman award in 2008 by the American School Band Director's Association. Presently Dixie plays the organ and directs the choir at her church, plays her oboe in various community ensembles and has a studio of twenty-five oboe students.
