Daniel Bukvich is one of more interesting composers who always manages to surprise performers and listeners. This goes back to his Symphony No.1 In Memoriam:Dresden 1945 with its unique scoring and the graphic yet descriptive notation of the last movement. The four compositions on this recording definitely portray Bukvich’s uniqueness. SYMS-75 Concert March features several instrumental surprises going beyond the usual concert march. Three Phrases from Yugoslav Folk Songs has its own episodes of uniqueness and the listener can detect some possible influence of Vaclav Nelhybel. Variations and Theme is written in more of a traditional band style but there are some special touches within. The final work is Missa Requiem for Chamber Band and Voices. Of interest is the varied instrumentation of the flute family and the “auxiliary clarinet relatives”. The mass runs the emotional gamut of ethereal quiet to powerful sonorities along with intriguing percussion and non-traditional effects from vocalists and instrumentalists. The music of Daniel Bukvich deserves more performances from capable ensembles; this fine recording just might spearhead that campaign.
