For years I have rightfully sung the praises of the UNLV Wind Orchestra and here’s the latest opportunity to get acquainted with this extraordinary ensemble. The title is taken from the fourth movement of the Chick Corea Concerto for Trombone. The unparalleled Joseph Alessi cuts loose on this Corea treasure…transcribed and arranged by John Dickson. The Boston Brass is featured with the wind orchestra in Five Cities by Jorge Machain. The movements are City of Light, City of the Sea, City of Flames, Cadenza: City of the Forest and City of Mankind. The music is most descriptive challenging the quintet and orchestra with spectacular virtuosity. Machain is also the composer of Her Name is Nessa; an overture in the film music style with a hint of Celtic flair from an adventurous maiden named Nessa. Joe’s Tango opens with Machain’s fresh new transcription of Hugo Montenegro’s Fanfare for the New. A high quality recording indeed!!
