This is the second volume of a magnificent three CD series by the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy. The first volume featured Russian band originals, this volume focuses on German-Austrian originals. The least familiar composition on this recording is Variations on “Wilhelm Von Oranien” by Richard Strauss. This work was rediscovered in the archives of the Royal House of the Netherlands in 1999. Other compositions are Beethoven’s March WoO 20 in C Major (Zapfenstreich), Theme & Variations (Schoenberg), Little Three Penny Opera Suite for Wind Instruments (Weill), March in Eb (Bruckner), Symphony in Bb for Concert Band (Hindemith) and Nocturno in C Op.24 (Mendelssohn)… this is the original eleven wind composition that was later rescored as the familiar Overture for Winds for larger wind orchestra with percussion.
