Ribbons: The West Chester University Wind Ensemble
Conductor: Andrew Yozviak
Publisher: Mark Masters 56464-MCD
The recordings of Andrew Yozviak and the West Chester University Wind Ensemble are one of the jewels in the Mark catalog. The brilliant “Downey Overture” by Oscar Navarro is the opening work on this superlative recording. “Fascinating Ribbons” is by noted composer Joan Tower. This is Tower’s first work exclusively for band. “A Colour Symphony” (Symphony No. 3) is Philip Sparke’s challenging five movement, third symphony for band. Colors and their implications have been the subject of varied music works such as “A Color Symphony” for orchestra (Arthur Bliss), and “Sketches in Color” for piano (Robert Starer). “Funeral March, in memory of Rikard Nordraak” (Edward Greig) is well known in three settings; piano, brass choir, and this version for band. Also featured on Ribbons is “Letters” by Kelijah Dunton, and “Chirche, for Wind Orchestra” by Chang Su Koh.
