American Band College

Max & Nell McKee American Band College Lifetime Service Award

ABC was founded in 1989 by Max McKee, who was working full-time at Southern Oregon University as the Director of Bands. He had an idea to create a summer program for band directors to attend clinics, rehearsals, sightreading sessions, and two major concerts during an 18-day event here in Ashland. After a few years, in 1992, with Max’s creativity and foresight, the summer program evolved into a Master’s of Music Degree. The first class of six graduates graduated in 1994.

Max and Nell’s supportive relationship and love for ABC laid the foundation for the core ideas that define the ABC family—baby photos, camaraderie, teamwork, hosting after-concert parties at their home, and much more. ABC finally turned a small profit after five long years. Thanks to Nell’s incredible investment skills, the ABC Endowment Fund was established to help fund the large panel of guest teachers each summer. Similar to Sousa donating $1 a month to serve in the Army, Max accepted a $1 annual salary to continue helping build the ABC endowment.

The Max and Nell McKee American Band College Lifetime Service Award is given to individuals whose unwavering dedication to the American Band College and their willingness to make a difference in the lives of music educators truly serve as an inspiration. We sincerely thank you for your steadfast commitment.
