Nutt &#8211; Series 3"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Introduction\n<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In music, there are many traditional ideas or concepts that have been taught and\npassed down through the years that are only \u201chalf-true\u201d. This series of ideas,\ndeveloped by H.E. Nutt, co-founder of VanderCook College of Music, seeks to\nmake you think of improved ways of teaching the student. His concept was that\n\u201cwhy do we teach \u201chalf-truths\u201d, only confusing the student and interfering with their\nprogress?\u201d If we teach the student exactly what the concept means from the\nbeginning, we will eliminate the long term confusion and so when the student\nprogresses, they will do so without questioning the validity of what was taught in\nthe first place.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color\"><em><strong>This series can be \u201ccontroversial\u201d, so proceed with caution&#8230; <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Series Three\nFOOT TAP\n<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Many students use the down-up motion of the toe in measuring the length of notes.\nWhen tapping the foot in 4\/4 time four beat rhythm, it is customary to say \u201cdown-\nup\u201d for a quarter note and to indicate this with arrows thus&#8230;.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"http:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Screen-Shot-2021-01-12-at-2.16.52-PM-150x150.png\" alt=\"Arrows up and down\" class=\"wp-image-5800\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a HALF TRUTH!&#8230; The tone does NOT start until the toe actually STRIKES the\nfloor. In other words, the tone starts at the END of the \u201cdown\u201d motion&#8230; not on the\nway down.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first half of the quarter note starts when the toe strikes the floor and carries to\nthe TOP of the \u201cup\u201d motion.
