Barnhouse"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When a publishing company is in business for over 130 years, quite a catalog can be developed.&nbsp; And, as with all publishers, some are hits, while some are misses.&nbsp; And there are always those works which gain greater popularity than anticipated, and those that get \u201clost\u201d along the way.&nbsp; Here\u2019s a look at ten C. L. Barnhouse publications over the years that are all excellent pieces which either have fallen by the wayside, for whatever reason, or may not be familiar to today\u2019s band directors.&nbsp; In no set order:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:39% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"454\" height=\"582\" src=\"http:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-26-at-3.32.15-PM-1.png\" alt=\"And the Angels Called Cover\" class=\"wp-image-4786 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-26-at-3.32.15-PM-1.png 454w, https:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-26-at-3.32.15-PM-1-254x325.png 254w, https:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-26-at-3.32.15-PM-1-328x420.png 328w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 454px) 100vw, 454px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>You can\u2019t talk about Barnhouse music without mentioning <strong>James Swearingen<\/strong>.&nbsp; I doubt there\u2019s any composer of band music in the last half-century who has had more performances.&nbsp; One of his pieces that I found extremely moving was \u201c<strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.barnhouse.com\/product\/012-3461-00\/\" target=\"_blank\">And The Angels Called<\/a><\/strong>,\u201d (2006) which was commissioned by a high school band that tragically lost three of its members.&nbsp; At one point in the piece, brief solos from three instruments \u2013 those played by the late students \u2013 are played.&nbsp; The range of emotion in this piece \u2013 grief to joy \u2013 is truly moving.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 37%\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"392\" height=\"534\" src=\"http:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-26-at-3.39.15-PM.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4791 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-26-at-3.39.15-PM.png 392w, https:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-26-at-3.39.15-PM-239x325.png 239w, https:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-26-at-3.39.15-PM-308x420.png 308w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 392px) 100vw, 392px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Another composer long associated with us, and very well known in the band world, was <strong>Alfred Reed<\/strong>.&nbsp; He made many arrangements for us, and we were proud to publish many of his original works.&nbsp; \u201c<strong><em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"A Northern Legend (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.barnhouse.com\/product\/029-0116-00\/\" target=\"_blank\">A Northern Legend<\/a><\/em><\/strong>\u201d (1972) is one of his works that doesn\u2019t get as many performances as it used to, despite its quality and merit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:34% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"741\" height=\"1024\" src=\"http:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-26-at-3.43.52-PM-741x1024.png\" alt=\"Reinzi Cover\" class=\"wp-image-4792 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-26-at-3.43.52-PM-741x1024.png 741w, https:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-26-at-3.43.52-PM-235x325.png 235w, https:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-26-at-3.43.52-PM-768x1061.png 768w, https:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-26-at-3.43.52-PM-696x962.png 696w, https:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-26-at-3.43.52-PM-304x420.png 304w, https:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-26-at-3.43.52-PM.png 802w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 741px) 100vw, 741px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>In 1933, we published <strong>Victor Grabel<\/strong>\u2019s transcription of <strong>Wagner<\/strong>\u2019s \u201c<strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jwpepper.com\/Rienzi-Overture\/56978.item#\/submit\" target=\"_blank\">Rienzi Overture<\/a><\/strong>.\u201d&nbsp; Grabel was one of the early members of the American Bandmasters Association, and as school bands were developing in the 1930\u2019s, Barnhouse was looking for more serious repertoire.&nbsp; This particular transcription works very well, and was the same arrangement recorded by Frederick Fennell for the Eastman Wind Ensemble \u201cWagner for Band\u201d album.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 38%\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"462\" height=\"610\" src=\"http:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-26-at-3.49.45-PM.png\" alt=\"Prelude and Rondo Cover\" class=\"wp-image-4796 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-26-at-3.49.45-PM.png 462w, https:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-26-at-3.49.45-PM-246x325.png 246w, https:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-26-at-3.49.45-PM-318x420.png 318w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 462px) 100vw, 462px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>We have always been proud of being <strong>David Holsinger<\/strong>\u2019s first publisher.&nbsp; His debut work, \u201c<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jwpepper.com\/Prelude-and-Rondo\/987321.item#\/submit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Prelude and Rondo (opens in a new tab)\">Prelude and Rondo<\/a><\/strong>,\u201d is a real tour-de-force for mature bands, and it has never gone out of print.&nbsp; David\u2019s career as a composer has been lengthy and successful, and we are proud that he is publishing with us once again.&nbsp; If you want an ambitious, aggressive piece, and you have a solid band, this is a wonderful one to tackle!<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:34% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\" src=\"http:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/cover-large_file.png\" alt=\"The Hermitage Cover\" class=\"wp-image-4856 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/cover-large_file.png 450w, https:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/cover-large_file-244x325.png 244w, https:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/cover-large_file-315x420.png 315w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Similarly, we were also the last publisher of the great <strong>Clifton Williams<\/strong>.&nbsp; I\u2019ve always viewed him as one of the greats of 20<sup>th<\/sup> -century band music, and I\u2019m surprised that we don\u2019t hear more of his music today. &nbsp; His final two completed works were released posthumously in 1976.&nbsp; One of them is a wonderful concert march called \u201c<strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"The Hermitage (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.barnhouse.com\/product\/029-1444-00\/\" target=\"_blank\">The<\/a><\/strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"The Hermitage (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.barnhouse.com\/product\/029-1444-00\/\" target=\"_blank\"> <\/a><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"The Hermitage (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.barnhouse.com\/product\/029-1444-00\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hermitage<\/a><\/strong>.\u201d&nbsp; His name is still well-known in the band world, but lots of band people are unaware of Warren\u2019s career writing and orchestrating music for film and TV.&nbsp; He was a wonderful composer and a brilliant orchestrator and arranger.&nbsp; Warren wrote or arranged several pieces for us, and his arrangement of the Irish lullaby \u201c<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.barnhouse.com\/product\/012-2284-00\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Deir In De (opens in a new tab)\">Deir In De<\/a><\/strong>\u201d is absolutely gorgeous.&nbsp; Trivia: it was commissioned by WIBC in 1990.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:35% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"856\" src=\"http:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-27-at-11.36.29-AM.png\" alt=\"Emblem of Freedom Cover\" class=\"wp-image-4868 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-27-at-11.36.29-AM.png 640w, https:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-27-at-11.36.29-AM-243x325.png 243w, https:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-27-at-11.36.29-AM-314x420.png 314w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Another composer of yesteryear who is synonymous with Barnhouse was <strong>Karl King<\/strong>.&nbsp; Bands today play lots of King marches, especially middle school bands playing some of his easier ones, but in total he wrote 185 marches, and over 100 other works in varying styles.&nbsp; And his circus marches are still quite popular today.&nbsp; Whenever he was asked what he felt his best march was, King always replied with \u201c<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.barnhouse.com\/product\/012-3248-00\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Emblem of Freedom (opens in a new tab)\">Emblem of Freedom<\/a><\/strong>.\u201d&nbsp; It\u2019s a powerful, challenging march that\u2019s as solid as any march you\u2019ll ever hear.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 31%\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"644\" height=\"858\" src=\"http:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-27-at-11.42.08-AM.png\" alt=\"Barnhouse Cover\" class=\"wp-image-4871 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-27-at-11.42.08-AM.png 644w, https:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-27-at-11.42.08-AM-244x325.png 244w, https:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-27-at-11.42.08-AM-315x420.png 315w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 644px) 100vw, 644px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Another prolific composer and arranger whose career was extensive and highly successful was <strong>Robert Lowden<\/strong>.&nbsp; Bob did a great deal of commercial writing and arranging for groups like 101 Strings, and he also wrote a great deal of educational music as well.&nbsp; In 1968 we published his concert march, \u201c<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.barnhouse.com\/product\/012-1333-00\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Hollybush (opens in a new tab)\">Hollybush<\/a><\/strong>,\u201d which was dedicated to the United States Marine Band.&nbsp; It\u2019s a tremendous march, illustrating just one facet of this composer\u2019s tremendous skills and talents.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:31% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"636\" height=\"836\" src=\"http:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-27-at-12.02.51-PM.png\" alt=\"Andrea Chenie Cover\" class=\"wp-image-4879 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-27-at-12.02.51-PM.png 636w, https:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-27-at-12.02.51-PM-247x325.png 247w, https:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-27-at-12.02.51-PM-320x420.png 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 636px) 100vw, 636px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>One piece which is a sentimental favorite of mine dates back from the era of what Leonard Smith called the \u201cClassic Concert Band\u201d era.&nbsp; Many of the professional bands of a century ago played the excerpts from <strong>Umberto Giordano<\/strong>\u2019s opera \u201c<strong>Andrea Chenier<\/strong>\u201d as arranged by Giuseppe Vaninetti.&nbsp; It was not published until 1951, in an arrangement by <strong>J. J. Richards<\/strong>, and more recently we published a newer edition.&nbsp; It\u2019s a tremendously dramatic band work, characterized by bel canto brass solos and all the emotion of verismo opera.&nbsp; It\u2019s a beautiful contrast to so many rhythmic and percussive works which characterize many contemporary works.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>We are proud to keep our entire back-catalogue of Barnhouse owned works available through print-on-demand technology, and for that reason, these gems from through the years at Barnhouse \u2013 as well as hundreds and hundreds of other works \u2013 remain perpetually available. &nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When a publishing company is in business for over 130 years, quite a catalog can be developed.&nbsp; And, as with all publishers, some are hits, while some are misses.&nbsp; And there are always those works which gain greater popularity than anticipated, and those that get \u201clost\u201d along the way.&nbsp; Here\u2019s a look at ten C.
