{"id":3660,"date":"2018-10-26T13:57:55","date_gmt":"2018-10-26T20:57:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/?p=3660"},"modified":"2026-01-26T14:02:32","modified_gmt":"2026-01-26T22:02:32","slug":"persistence-persistence-and-more-persistence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/index.php\/persistence-persistence-and-more-persistence\/","title":{"rendered":"Persistence, Persistence, and more Persistence!"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What is SUCCESS?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">How do we define\/determine SUCCESS in our music education world?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Moreover, how do we ATTAIN-and-SUSTAIN SUCCESS?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What is the pathway one must traverse to achieve the elusive destination we know as SUCCESS?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">To borrow an equation from Angela Duckworth\u2019s wonderful book <\/span><span class=\"s2\">GRIT<\/span><span class=\"s1\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">TALENT +<b> EFFORT <\/b>= SKILLS<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">SKILLS + <b>EFFORT<\/b> = ACHIEVEMENT<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As we quickly ascertain, the common denominator is <b>EFFORT<\/b>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>One can be \u201ctalented,\u201d one can be \u201cskilled,\u201d but without the magic elixir of <b>EFFORT<\/b>, the \u201cachievement,\u201d (whatever it may be for each of us) will not be realized.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It would be logical (then) to simply conclude, \u201cIf I dedicate myself to a rigorous schedule of <b>EFFORTING<\/b>, my personal and professional goals will come to fruition.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>However, we know &#8211; all too well &#8211; there is far more to it.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is not a quick-easy trip from idea-to-outcome.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In fact, rarely does the planned course unfold as it was originally conceived to do; please refer to Illustration #1: (<\/span><span class=\"s2\">What I planned.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What happened.<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> \u2026shared by Julia Gamolina)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/index.php\/persistence-persistence-and-more-persistence\/screen-shot-2017-03-20-at-4-49-13-am\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3661\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3661 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Screen-Shot-2017-03-20-at-4.49.13-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"629\" height=\"346\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Screen-Shot-2017-03-20-at-4.49.13-AM.png 629w, https:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Screen-Shot-2017-03-20-at-4.49.13-AM-325x179.png 325w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 629px) 100vw, 629px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">At this point it is tempting to throw-in-the-towel and turn our backs on the self-assigned goal(s)\u2026even claiming (rationalizing!) the original idea was not worthy and\/or certainly not achievable.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>However what-about-those who always are at-the-pinnacle of their game?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>How do they get there and stay there?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Are they always just the benefactors of good luck?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What do they know and do that ensures their ongoing high level achievements?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Might I suggest all outstanding accomplishments are fueled by PERSISTENCE, or &#8211; if you will &#8211; \u201cGiving up giving up.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Are these master teachers TALENTED?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Of course they are.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Are they SKILLED?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Absolutely.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Above all, they are PERSISTENT.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They don\u2019t know any special shortcut, or some secret code; they just stay &#8220;on it&#8221; and &#8220;at it&#8221; until they arrive at the road sign that reads:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>ACCOMPLISHMENT\/SUCCESS.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Illustration #2 may explain it best:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6549 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/bandworld.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/the-iceberg-of-successFull.png\" alt=\"Iceberg\" width=\"1398\" height=\"1048\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On my desk is a framed-quote* from Calvin Coolidge; it serves as a BOLD reminder of the answer to the quartet of inquiries at the beginning of this article.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"td_quote_box td_box_center\">\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s4\">Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not. Nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not. Unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not. The world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">&#8212; Calvin Coolidge<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Time-and-time again this wisdom has served as a WAKE-UP call (a slap-in-the-face, if you will!), particularly when I was tempted to retreat-in-defeat.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>For our programs, for our students, and for ourselves; PERSISTENCE IS THE KEY.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"s1\">\u2026STRIKE UP THE BAND!&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is SUCCESS?\u00a0 How do we define\/determine SUCCESS in our music education world?\u00a0 Moreover, how do we ATTAIN-and-SUSTAIN SUCCESS?\u00a0 What is the pathway one must traverse to achieve the elusive destination we know as SUCCESS?
