James Lotz, Professor of Music at Tennessee Tech University, is principal bassoonist with the Bryan Symphony Orchestra and the Cumberland Quintet. He also performs regularly with the Nashville Symphony and the Nashville Opera and Ballet Orchestra. He has been principal bassoonist of the Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra and the Jaap Schroeder Chamber Orchestra as well as a member of the Bridgeport Symphony, Norwalk Symphony, Knoxville Symphony, Breckenridge Music Festival, the Mexico City Philharmonic, Nashville Chamber Orchestra and served for many years on the faculty of the Sewanee Summer Music Festival.
An active studio musician in Nashville, he has participated in numerous commercial recordings for PDQ Bach, Matchbox 20, Alan Jackson, Faith Hill, Andy Griffith, Three Dog Night, John Michael Talbot, Carrie Underwood, as well as recordings of classical chamber music, orchestral music and movie soundtracks. Mr. Lotz holds degrees from the University of Tennessee and Yale University. His principal teachers include Keith McClelland, William Winstead, Arthur Weisberg and Stephen Maxym.
