Lynne Jackson is recognized throughout Texas as an adjudicator, clinician and mentor to young students and teachers. She has taught instrumental music for 40 years. She studied trumpet at the University of Michigan and Vandercook College of Music and served as a band director in southwestern Michigan before moving to Richardson, Texas, in 1977. She spent 26 years as a band director with RISD, teaching at North and Parkhill junior high schools and, for 13 years, at J.J. Pearce High School. In 1983 she was named the RISD Teacher of the Year.
Jackson received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities in 1995 to study the life and music of Mozart in Vienna and Prague, and since then has traveled extensively in Europe, South America and Canada. As a staff member for the Texas Ambassadors of Music and as a conductor for the Texas Youth Orchestra, she performed with students throughout Europe. On three occasions she traveled to New York City with her students to perform at Carnegie Hall.
Jackson “retired” in 2003, but has remained very busy. She joined the Plano ISD as a part-time, 6th grade beginning instrument teacher at Robinson Middle School. She also became an adjunct lecturer in music education at SMU. This past year, she returned to the RISD as a part-time teacher/mentor for the Berkner Area Bands. In addition, in 2009 Jackson and SMU music education colleague, Brian Merrill founded the Young Educator Seminars (YES). YES offers young music teachers continuing education through five annual open-invitation seminars presented by accomplished and acclaimed teachers.
