Old Comrades: a classic CD revisited

This is an interesting choice for my Old Comrades. It’s a pair of vintage recordings showcasing one of the great high school bands in Texas; a state rich with unparalleled concert bands. Eddie Green is a legendary band figure and his recordings are all superlative. This collection features some transcriptions rarely heard elsewhere such as Excerpts from Concerto for Orchestra (Bartok/Irwin) The Rite of Spring (Stravinsky/Rives-Jones) and Symphony No. 5 Finale (Prokofiev/Helm). Other transcriptions include March from Symphonic Metamorphosis (Hindemith/Baird), Bachianas Brasilieras No. 4 (Villa-Lobos/Alfred Reed) Enigma Variations (Elgar/Slocum) and a pair of Mark H. Hindsley arrangements; Till Eulenspiegels Merry Pranks (R. Strauss) and Scheherezade Movement 4 (Rimsky-Korsakov). Two original band masterpieces round out the collections; La Fiesta Mexicana (H. Owen Reed) and Variations & Fugue (Giannini). Very professional performances throughout.
